State of the Art Equipment

Sport Insight uses the best data collection and analysis equipment available

Multidisciplinary

Sport Insight houses experts from many different backgrounds including engineering, kinesiology, statistics and high level data analysis.

Additional Facilities

Besides the main lab, Sport Insight also has access to many other facilities, including the Olympic Oval, ice hockey rinks, 200m and 400m running tracks, swimming pools and many others.

Sport Insight Equipment

Sport Insight uses and has access to state of the art equipment, such as:

In-Lab Motion Capture

In-Lab Motion Capture

Sport Insight uses multiple, state of the art Motion Capture Systems (Vicon & Motion Analysis Corp.). With over 24 different high speed cameras, Sport Insight can record motion from a variety of different applications in a controlled laboratory setting. The lab also contains over 5 force plates, multiple treadmills and a 30m lab runway allowing for highly accurate measurement of both the forces and movement patterns of athletes and participants.

Portable Motion Capture

Portable Motion Capture

While many applications can be measured in the lab, other times it may be imperative to perform measurements outside the lab. Sport Insight has a portable motion capture system that allows for measurements anywhere outside the lab, in the participants natural environment.

3D Foot and Body Scanners

3D Foot and Body Scanners

Sport Insight uses multiple 3D foot and body scanners. These scanners create hi-resolution 3D images of the body to allow for detailed measurements. Within the lab, the 3D scanners include an HP laser foot scanner and a Tech Med 3D body scanner. Sport Insight has used these scanners to get specific body measurements of participants as well as to investigate foot and shoe fit within the NFL.

Internal Imaging

Internal Imaging

Sport Insight also has access to other amazing imagining equipment that allows for measurements of internal structures of the body. This imaging equipment includes ultrasound probes, MRI and X-Ray. Sport Insight has also developed data collection techniques to take these measurements both statically and dynamically.

Metabolic Activity

Sport Insight utilizes exercise physiology equipment in order to quantify the metabolic activity of athletes and participants. This equipment consists of wearable, stationary and desktop metabolic carts.

Performance

Performance

Aside from metabolic carts, Sport Insight may also utilize blood lactate measurements to quantify elements of fatigue. Multiple treadmills (regular and instrumented) as well as cycle ergometers and full body dynamometers (Biodex and Cybex) and available to measure the performance and muscle activity of participants.

Robot Testing

Robot Testing

Sport Insight has a six-degree of freedom hexapod robotic testing machine. This allows for Sport Insight to measure many mechanical properties of footwear and sports equipment such as outsole traction, cushioning, storage and return of energy (hockey sticks, golf clubs, sport surfaces) amoung other aspects.

Mechanical Testing

Mechanical Testing

Aside from our robotic testing machine, Sport Insight also utilizes many conventional mechanical testing machines such as Instron and MTS. These machines have been used to measure cushioning properties of footwear and surfaces as well as bending stiffness properties of footwear.
